We believe that the technology has become mature for commercialization, and that standardization bodies are coming up with protocols which offer good robustness, energy efficiency and quality of service.

The following protocol stack will be adopted as the standard communication technology, and the goal of this project is to provide open-source implementations of it:

application

CoAP, HTTP

transport

UDP, TCP

IP/routing

IETF RPL

adaptation

IETF 6LoWPAN

medium access

IEEE802.15.4e

phy

IEEE802.15.4-2006

  1. Hello everyone.

i need some help to understand the basics of the following OpenWsn protocol stacks. I read it already but i need some clarifications about these 4 down. A brief description of what they do will be welcome.

    Thanks.

    Hermann.

  2. Hi hermann tchouta,

    Briefly, one sentence per layer:

    • PHY: it defines the physical wireless frequency, the modulating/de-modulating mechanism. basically about how to transfer digital single to electronic wave.
    • MAC (medium access control): define the mechanism how the motes communicate each other within one-hop.(maxium 127Bytes)
    • IP/routing layer (I would like to say this layer first): define the mechanism how the motes communicate each other with multiple hop (header is about 40bytes)
    •  adaptation layer: define how to compress the 40 bytes header and related headers to fit in a 127bytes packet.

  3. Hi Tengfei Chang.

i would like to know why in the wireshark we have to filter  for the 'zep' .

Does the OpenWSN stack make use of the Zigbee Protocol?

    thank you.

  4. Tengfei Chang Thanks for answering.

So, does it means that the Network layer is implemented under zigbee specifications?

Or can you please just summarise how the zigbee proto. fits into the OpenWSN Protocol Stack (smile)

    Thanks for helping.

    1. Hi hermann tchouta, the zigbee protocol is only for debugging. It doesn't belong to the protocol used in the mesh network.

Once the packet formed with the format defined in protocol stack, the packet will be forwarded to a gateway (a computer/raspberryPi), which runs OpenVisualizer (OV). the OV will add an additional zigbee header to the packet and forward to an interface. That's just for easy filtering the packet generated from OpenWSN from other packet going through the same interface.

      1. Thanks a lot for the explanation Tengfei Chang.
